Men’s Violence Prevention and Peace Education: Drawing on Galtung to Explore the Plurality of Violence(s), Peace(s), and Masculinities

This article examines a concern that some programs engaging men in the prevention of violence against women use overly homogenized conceptions violence. In response, authors draw on their experience teaching men's North America and UK background peace studies to bring Johan Galtung’s influential conflict frameworks into men’s context. It is argued feminist-informed Galtungian approach can support existing by 1) incorporating heterogeneous direct, cultural, structural violences; 2) introducing positive negative peaces; 3) outlining different programmatic strategies through peacekeeping, peacemaking, peacebuilding approaches. outlines how framework help improve providing an accessible, contextually adaptable, analytically useful understanding violence, peace, interdependent relationships between violences, peaces, peace-work addressing women.
